Much ado about Avery

No, it's not Capitals -elated, but it is pretty funny.

Fashionista/pest Sean Avery took a potshot at Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phanuef and his girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert. In the video, Avery comments on NHL players "falling in love with his sloppy seconds."

Avery and Cuthbert were once romantically linked.

Another woman linked to Avery and a current NHL player is model Rachel Hunter. Hunter is currently dating Los Angeles Kings player Jarrett Stoll.

In the video, you can clearly see Avery is pleased with himself. The way he approaches the press, smiles as the cameras turn on, and then sheepishly acts as if he is just making innocent commentary before strutting out of the locker room.

It's grade-A agitation and would have made for a grade-A match-up on ice.

Only that didn't happen. Avery was suspended indefinitely by the NHL and will have a talking-to with Gary Bettmann in near future.

For that? It wasn't like the comment was particularly obscene. I've seen harsher comments scribbled on a metro seat or said by children under the age of 15.

I don't know about you, but I love to hate Sean Avery and I would have stayed up to watch a Western Conference tilt with a storyline like that behind it.

Avery's comments were crude and over-the-line, but that's just who he is. The truth is, the only rules Avery broke were the rules of good taste, not the NHL rule book.

The Stars went on to win 3-1.

Perhaps there will be another Sean Avery rule: no saying naughty things to the press.
